Something i have been thinking about for a long time....

Don't you think places like PC World, Comet, Curry's have made it hardier for people to make a living out of making computers?

The thing that gets me is that, people get sidetracked by how little the computer costs compared to the build quility. They don't understand that places like them are pulling them in for another sale when their computer goes bang.

I had to do some repairs on a kids computer where he thought it would be funny to run a server from his computer that he brought from the shop and he messed up and the OS (Stupid Pre-Installion) The CPU Heatsink had burn marks accross it and smelt when we took it out. The ram had burn and the hdd was red hot. So i said to him get red of it and use a rank but he wouldn't have none of it.

Overall i am just trying to point out that PC WORLD Are mind washing people into thinking their stuff is great. And that is something i hate, and it is something that is completely wrong.

As a free-lance Computer Technion, i find it so annoying about this.

Does any of you have this kind of attitude towards them?

It's the same with any product - cars, internet providers, mp3 players, cigarettes, etc...

The majority of people just don't care enough to properly research their purchases, and places like PC world fill that (very large) niche in the market. They provide cheap PCs that fulfill the function of "black box under desk that internet comes out of".

I don't begrudge PC World / Curry's their profits - if their customers were more discerning, they'd be forced to respond to the market and provide better value for money.

A computer isn't a camera, obviously, but a great deal of people treat it in the same way - they never open a digital camera out of curiosity, and will never open a PC to see how it fits together. That's not PC World's fault, imo.

Yes and no...well sorta...its like the saying, there are no such things as problemas, only challenges, nay opportunities!!

Many, indeed most do not know about PC World, Staples et al regarding lack of product knowledge amongst most of their staff. So they go in, buy a PC in a casual manner and often treat it as so - never backing up, never defragging, never removing old, redundant apps and never doing a virus scan.

PCW and the like tend to trat PC's like any old household appliance such as a TV, vavuum cleaner or microwave oven. PC's of course differ due to thier modular nature. This makes them upgradeable unlike a TV. Therefore, upgrading PC's can become alost as importand as making / selling one in the first place.

A certain amount of education (without sounding patronising) is neccessary when selling a PC in my view. As a PC manufacturer, it's up to you to sell the reasonswhy Mr. Jack Average looking to spend £500 - £1000 should spend his cash with you and not PCW whos ads are all over the TV and newspapers.

So yes, I agree that PCW and co have made things harder. On the other hand, not everyone likes the one size fits all approach and may be willing to turn away from the big sores and even pay more providing they know they''ll get something extra in return, which could be as simple as better product knowledge and customer service.
