Sempron Mobile

I recently dismantled a laptop, (cracked screen and broken chassis), but managed to save most of the components, what i'm wondering though is am i able to put the Sempron Mobile 3000+ processor in a normal 754 socket motherboard?

Should be OK.

I think the CPU doesn't come with the "lid" that covers the whole chip, so you'll have to make sure that your HSF gets good contact with the cap. Other than that, the pin assembly should just slot right in to a 754 pin socket.

ok thanks for your help i'll give it a go and as for the top of the chip, when i took the old heatsink off it, there was only a tiny little square of thermal paste on it rather than the smothering you get on a desktop chip, so i assume your correct about it having no "lid".

thanks again

so close.....

ok well, i got a new mobo, (Asus K8V-MX), shoved the processor in, stick of ram, connected up the hard drive, good to go.... or so i thought.

about 10 seconds after powering on the computer shuts itself down, it does not even reach POST, nothing displays on the monitor.

After doing hours of playing about with it, trying a different PSU, making sure it wasnt a forced low fan rpm shutdown, making sure my on switch wasnt jamming forcing a shutdown and removing everything except for the CPU, RAM and cooler from the mobo, i'm still left with the same problem.

I did get so annoyed at one point that i removed the RAM, this time the computer stayed on, giving a series of beeps.

I'm not sure where to go from here, i dont have any other compatible RAM in the house so i'll grab a stick tomorrow and try it out. I just cant understand why it will stay on and beep without RAM, however with RAM it just shuts down after a minimal time.

Could anyone else shed any light on this problem? Any advice would be greatly appreciated as its been driving me crazy all day.

FIXED IT! turns out the holder for the CPU heatsink was keeping it ever so slightly above the CPU, apparently theres a failsafe and if the CPU hasnt got enough pressure/touching the heatsink it'll automatically just shut itself down.

learn something new every day

up and running now

Nice.

It's fortunate that failsafe was there - it would have been pretty terminal otherwise
