CPU fan

Hi, new to the forum but glad to be aboard.
Can anyone help with this one. Switched on yesterday and got a loud bleeping and a screen message
'CPUFAN does not function correctly' then the computer shuts down. I have opened it up and both the CPU fan and the main cooling fan are working perfectly, any suggestions ???ÂÂ! John

Re: CPU fan

Hi, Welcome to ItsAllPC

Have you installed any new hardware recently?

Do you know what motherboard you have or Do you have a motherboard manual?

If you have a motherboard manual you could compare the Bios beep codes to the beep(s) you are hearing, the manual may offer a solution.

Good Luck

Re: CPU fan

no new hardware added and the beep is more like an alarm alerting you to the screen message, within about 10 seconds it just shuts down. Cant find any details about the motherboard but will continue to search if you think this might help.............cheers, John :-\

Re: CPU fan

Try clean the motherboard.

Where abouts on start up does it say this, straight away, or can you get into the bios first?

Re: CPU fan

as soon as I switch on, within a few seconds before anything appears onscreen it starts to bleep, then all I get is the message 'CPUFAN does not function correctly' then it all shuts down. I thought I would find it was simplt the fan not starting up but as I said earlier, both CPU fan and main fan are running.

Re: CPU fan

Are you sure the CPU fan cable is plugged into the right place on the mobo?

Re: CPU fan

You could try buying a new CPU fan, shouldnt cost too much... Although I can't see why your getting that error. ???

Re: CPU fan

Well, you say the CPU fan has never been unplugged, the fan is working fine, and its never happend before. I think what may be tripping the BIOS to say that is that the CPU is getting to hot due to a heatsink problem and it is tripping the thermal sensor in the inside. So, the BIOS says that there is a problem with the CPU fan.

If that's not it, then it could be a problem with the mobo, which are known to, in my area, sort of spontaneously stop working.

Otherwise, midimoto is right, it could be a problem with the fan itself. It is probably not reporting the RPMs correctly, thus causing the error to appear.

I can't really provide an accruate diagnosis, because, well, I've never heard of anything like this before.

How old is the computer...what are the specs?

Re: CPU fan

I have to say I'm overwhelmed with all the response to my problem, re the last post I think I will remove the fan, give it a clean and try that first, the computer is about 4 years old cant find the spec. as I cant get into the memory to find it. Everything looks a bit dusty in there so I guess a clean out may help. I'll let you know.
By the way, excuse my ignorance but is mobo short for motherboard ???

Re: CPU fan

Yes, Mobo is short for motherboard and it is from the language of "loser." That is what I speak.

Re: CPU fan

If you haven't tried resetting the BIOS, it might be a plan. Don't hold your breath though.

FAN speed monitoring is done through that third yellow cable, which monitors resistance in the motor. If that cable is broken alone, the fan will still spin, but there will be no signal. The emergency shutdown when fan fails option can be disabled in the BIOS...which you can't get into. Perhaps if you're lucky, the default options is disabled, which is why I suggest resetting the BIOS.

Re: CPU fan

sounds like a possibilty, but any ideas how I can get into the BIOS when I cant even get the thing to run for more than a few seconds.

Re: CPU fan

If it runs for only a few seconds, it leads me to believe that it is a overheating problem. Try refitting the heatsink/fan.

Re: CPU fan

Even with the fan turned off a PC will run for a minute or so before getting into the red zone. In fact, I once performed a feat or stupidity in the name of science, by placing my finger on a Celeron 2.4 GHz and starting it up. Within 2 seconds it burnt my finger, but the system ran for about 10 seconds before powering off.

No, it's more likely that the BIOS believes the CPU fan isn't running and is preventing the system from booting. There are some people out there that would actually try and use their PC without a CPU cooling fan. Trust me, I've seen it.

Re: CPU fan

ok, so heres the latest. Took off the fan and unclipped the heat sink which appeared to have some sort of compound/adhesive? between it and the centre of the CPU, (a sort of grey powdery substance which wiped off easily). I cleaned up both, put it all back together and still no joy.ÂÂ! :-[ :-[ :-[

Re: CPU fan

That would be thermal paste... (I think )

Replace the fan, eliminate that as the problem before you start taking things apart that you don't know much about...

Re: CPU fan

had a look in a computer manual and there does seem to be a thermal adhesive used between some heatsinks and CPUs. This could be the grey substance I mentioned which appeared to have broken down. Anyway, ordered some new thermal pads from mail order supplier and will see how that goes, otherwise will try a new fan.
