Cpu Problem ?

Hello

My mates had his PC for about 3 years.ÂÂ! It recently started doing something weird, when you power it up it doesnt bleep - and nothing comes up on the screen ( Not even BIOS) !!

To start off with ,

: disconnected all the HD/Floppy etc. Only Ram/Cpu/Mb and powered up, same problem.
: changed the RAM to test that - same problem.
: replaced the motherboard (an old 478 skt one) and used his CPU / RAM same problem.
: He then tried another 478 CPU and it was still the same problem - on the original mb
: When he put the old 478 CPU back in the old machine - it started to do the same problem !!
: So he has 2 machines doing the exact same thing...

Anyone got any new ideas ? Cause theres nothing else i can think about ?

Re: Cpu Problem ?

Checked Screen, and tried a known working PSU.

Re: Cpu Problem ?

If the original PSU was defective however, it could have killed the motherboard. Plugging in another motherboard could have killed it too, hence why the issue seems to be replicating. Trying a known-to-be-working PSU in conjunction with the now dead motherboards would yield nothing, because the damage has been done. Unless you tried the new motherboard with the good PSU first before the old PSU of course, which I bet you didn't.

Re: Cpu Problem ?

The PSU may be faulty. But it powers up other mobo fine.

If it was the PSU then how come the other computer doesnt work - and all that happend was putting the cpu from the first broken one in it.

Neil.

The mobo has an LED on it and seems to be glowing fine.

Re: Cpu Problem ?

Oh I see, I misunderstood.

btw, the glowing light is usually attached to just the +3.3 or +5 rail. You'll notice that if you unplug the 4-pin +12 rail or dual +12 6-pin the light still glows, or the 20-pin ATX or 24-pin ATX2 connector and leave the +12 in...in any case...it doesn't actually mean the PSU is okay, if just means it's providing standby voltage.
