Upgrading CPU's ?

Ok... Im running an intel Celeron... And a couple of websites I've checked out say That my motherboard is Compatable with Intel Celery & P4.

So... Is it just a case of take the old CPU off, put the new one on???

It sounds too simple...

Thanks
Midimoto

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

If you get the same socket P4 theyn yes it should be a simple swap. Make special note to see if you have to upgrade your BIOS though, sometimes that's required. If it is, the manufacturer website of your motherboard should have the latest BIOS available for download.

If you've never swapped CPU's before, it's worth looking for a guide as well. Getting the heatsink off, appplying new thermal paste/pad, and getting it all back on can be tricky with Intels (at least it was for me my first time.)

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

Because that motherboard has an 845 chipset, the maximum front side bus is 133 MHz.

This limits you to socket 478 533 MHz FSB processors, of which you will find new in retail. The maximum speed is Pentium 4 3.06 GHz, which is the first desktop Intel processor to use HyperThreading. Frequencies of Pentium 4 you can use are 2.26 GHz, 2.40B GHz (letter is important), 2.53 GHz, 2.66 GHz and 3.06 GHz. Additionally, there are 2.40A GHz and 2.80A GHz (letters are important) which are both 533 FSB, but use the newer Prescott core, and as such, are most likely not compatible with the power circuitry of your motherboard.

Removing one processor and installing another is easy as pie. The HSF (Heat Sink & Fan) comes away with the gentle prying of a screw driver, and snaps on easily. The processor itself fits into a ZIF (Zero Insertion Force) socket, which is keyed to prevent incorrect insertion. All socket 478 Pentium 4s (and up) have a heat slug package, which covers the core and prevents any damage to the die.

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

So The main thing I need to take note of if i mbuying a new processor is it has to be one of the following speeds?

2.26 GHz
2.40B GHz
2.53 GHz
2.66 GHz
3.06 GHz

If I buy a P4 that is one of them speeds, will it deffinately fit??

Are there any good places/websites to buy cheap processors in the UK ?
Thanks.

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

The problem is not so much whether the processor fits or not, it's whether it’s architecturally compatible with your system. All socket 478 processors are pin-compatible, but that doesn’t guarantee they’ll function correctly.

For example, a 2.40B GHz will work fine, but if you install a 2.40C Ghz it would end up running at 1.6 GHz. A 2.40A GHz (1MB Cache) would probably not boot at all, and if it did, would most likely end up damaging the system due to excessive power requirement and heat dissipation.

You may not be able to find 533 MHz FSB Northwood Pentium 4s available in retail now.

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

This sounds like it will fit but it is used:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/TESTED-FULLY-W...QQcmdZViewItem

Do you recomend not buying used processors?

If I showed all the Info I can get on a processor would you be able to tell me if it would work as a deffinate or is that not possible?

Re: Upgrading CPU's ?

That is a compatibile processor.

I can tell you that it’s compatible and should work. I can’t guarantee it’s not defective however.

Buying CPUs second hand is not the best idea, but might be the only option available to you. Used processors may have been subjected to aggressive overclocking, and may have been run at increased voltages which can potentially damage processors, especially Northwood Pentium 4s (like those we’re discussing), resulting in instability and other symptoms related to SNDS (Sudden Northwood Death Syndrome).

All I can say is be careful. Make sure you buy a processor that has run only at stock speeds.
