There's something kind of cool about working on old PCs.

i used to have a 400MHz PIII laptop which was cool to mess about with - I stuck a couple of Linux distros on it and fiddled with it till it worked OK. Then my eldest knocked it off the table. :|

I think Damn Small Linux is your best bet for getting something usable working. It has a nice wiki/FAQ with lots of information.
