HI saints, welcome to itsallPC

If you're going to ask about possible upgrades, how on earth do you imagine we can help without any indication of the type of system you currently have?! Please add PC details to your profile.

The reason we need to know about your PC, is the type of hardware you are using decides your possible upgrade options.

Pentium 4s come in 6 distinct generations:
  • Socket 423 Willamette: Speeds of 1.3 GHz to 2.0 GHz, 256k L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Willamette: Speeds of 1.4 GHz to 2.0 GHz, 256k L2 cache, 400 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Northwood: Speeds of 1.8A Ghz to 3.06 GHz, 512k L2 cache, 400~533 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Northwood C: Speeds of 2.4C to 3.4 GHz, 512k L2 cache, 800 MHz FSB
  • Socket 478 Prescott: Speeds of 2.4A GHz to 3.4E GHz, 1 MB L2 cache, 400~800 MHz FSB. Motherboards must support PRB for speeds over 2.8 GHz
  • Socket 775: Models 505 to 672 (2.67 GHz to 3.8 GHz), 1~2 MB L2 Cache, 533~800 MHz FSB

With each new generation, motherboard support is required. Even if your system is equipped with a Pentium 4, there's no guarantee that you can buy a current generation Pentium 4.

Pentium D, which is basically 2 Pentium 4s in a dual-core package, also requires specific chipset support.
