I have reistalled windows without reformatting the disk and thereby saving all my data etc and it now boots OK. Then I noticed that whenever I tried to use the USB ports the computer crashed in various ways. Fitting an uprated PSU (the original motherboard worked with a 250 watt PSU and this new motherboard obviously requires a 300watt one) fixed this problem and it all works fine now.
