Fixed the problem! Mwhuahahahaha
After giving up on previous methods, I finally decided to repair Windows XP using the CD. After doing this, the sound card drivers that Windows auto-installs worked and my Sound and Audio Devices in the Control Panel is not greyed out!
A note to whoever has the same problem: if you need to use the Windows XP CD's repair console, use it in the following manner. Pop the CD into your drive while your computer is still on. Reboot and press the button (mine was F12) that will take you to selective start-up options (where you choose which device you want to boot from). Select the CD Drive, and wait until you get to the screen where it asks you if you want to install a fresh copy of Windows or repair one. Choose install a fresh copy. The CD will then search for previous copies of Windows. When yours is found, press "r" (the instuctions on the screen also say typing "r" will repair Windows) and you are on your way to more sound. The rest of the repair is fairly straightforward, so I shouldn't have to explain that.
I'm not absolutely sure, but I believe this "Repair Console" on the CD basically restores a fresh copy of the "Windows" folder (C:/Windows). You won't have to worry about any data loss since this is the only folder being replaced. One thing that you do have to worry about is that if you have Windows Service Pack 2 installed and your CD installs SP1 (which was my case), you will revert to SP1. This isn't a big deal since you can always download SP2 from the Microsoft website.
I hope this helps to all who are experiencing the same problem I was!
And once again, thanks for your help syphus!
